Successfully Navigating the Judicial Appointments Process
Every competition that is run by the Judicial Appointments Commission will have one or more of the following components:–
- Application form
- Sift
- Selection day interview and role play.
Each stage is important and requires the deployment of specific skills and an appreciation of what is being required of you. You must demonstrate how you meet the standard five qualities and abilities for all members of the judiciary and how you meet the job description for the post applied for and your personal suitability.
For many lawyers it is years since they had to prepare for a competitive recruitment. In 2008/09 there were 3710 applications for 485 vacancies - 87% of applicants could not gain appointment.
The Judicial Appointments process is still relatively new and evolving. It is for this reason that many lawyers are uncertain how best to prepare. This uncertainty coupled with a lack of experience of competency based competitions can make the process of applying for judicial appointment extremely challenging.
